Your MOT has expired and you need to get somewhere. Can you just drive to the garage and sort it out? The answer isn't as straightforward as you might think, and the consequences of getting it wrong can be surprisingly expensive.
Here's what actually happens if you drive without a valid MOT in the UK.
Is it illegal to drive without an MOT?
Yes. In the UK, it's a criminal offence to drive a vehicle on a public road without a valid MOT certificate, unless the vehicle is exempt. This applies to any vehicle that is more than three years old (or more than one year old for taxis and ambulances).
The law is clear: no valid MOT means no driving on public roads. It doesn't matter if the car is perfectly roadworthy, if you're only going a short distance, or if your MOT expired yesterday. Without that certificate, you're breaking the law.

What are the penalties?
The fine

Unlike speeding or parking fines, there's no points-on-your-licence penalty for driving without an MOT. However, the financial penalty alone should be enough to make you think twice.
The insurance problem

Can you drive to an MOT test without a valid MOT?
Yes — but only under specific conditions. This is the one exception to the rule, and it's narrower than most people realise:
- You must have a pre-booked MOT appointment. You can't just drive to any garage hoping they'll fit you in.
- You must drive directly to the test centre. No detours, no stopping at the shops, no picking someone up on the way.
- The vehicle must be insured. You still need valid insurance even though the MOT has expired.
- The vehicle must be roadworthy. If the car has obvious defects — bald tyres, broken lights, dangerous faults — you could still be stopped and prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy vehicle, even on the way to an MOT.
If the vehicle fails its MOT, you can drive it directly home or to a garage for repairs, again by the most direct route and only if insured.
What about tax?
Here's another catch that many people miss: you cannot tax a vehicle without a valid MOT. The DVLA's systems are linked, so if your MOT has expired, you can't renew your car tax online.
This creates a chain reaction. Your MOT expires, so your tax can't be renewed, so now you're potentially driving without both a valid MOT and valid tax. That's two separate offences, and the penalties stack up.
The practical sequence when your MOT has lapsed is:
- Book an MOT
- Insure the vehicle (if not already insured)
- Drive directly to the MOT appointment
- Pass the MOT
- Tax the vehicle
- Drive normally
How to avoid letting your MOT expire

What if your car fails its MOT?
If your car fails while the previous MOT is still valid, you can continue driving until the old certificate expires (as long as no dangerous defects were found). This gives you time to arrange repairs.
If the old certificate has already expired and the car fails, you can only drive it directly home or to a garage for repairs. Once repaired, you can drive directly back to the test centre for a retest.
If a dangerous defect is found during the test, the car must not be driven at all until it's fixed — regardless of whether the old MOT was still valid.
